In the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) world, there are two main training providers for CPTED and two certification designations. What is the difference and which ones are right for you?
CPTED is a form of crime prevention that utilizes environmental modification to achieve the goal of reducing the fear of crime, reducing the incidence of crime, and improving the quality of life. It is experiencing a rapid rise in popularity due to its low-key effectiveness that does not rely on physical target hardening or police response. Architects, planners, code enforcement, fire departments, private security, police officers, school district officials, non-government organizations, private corporations, volunteers, and people around the world are being trained in CPTED and are putting it to use on a daily basis.

The National Institute of Crime Prevention (NICP) recently launched a series of online CPTED courses. Although normally conducted as in-person group training classes, these courses were created to meet the overwhelming demand for training opportunities during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In addition to the Basic CPTED and the Advanced CPTED course, CPTED for Schools was added as a specialized topic and is now available. This two day (16 hour) class is designed to be taken at your own pace.
Although recommended, neither Basic CPTED nor Advanced CPTED are prerequisites for this class. Because no previous training is required, the course begins with a brief overview of the basic CPTED principles with the remaining lessons devoted to applying those principles specifically to the school environment. The Florida Department of Education presented the following information to the commission on August 15, 2019. Among the numerous prevention strategies were several recommendations regarding Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles.

CPTED for Houses of Worship Class
The 2-day (24-hour) NICP CPTED for Houses of Worship class is available in-person and will be available online in the near future. The 3-day FCPTI CPTED for Houses of Worship class is available in-person in Florida.
